Membership Meeting, April 11, 2011 -- Summary

Our Annual Meeting was held beginning at 8:30pm in the music room of Moscow High School.  Fifty-nine members attended the meeting as well as several “guests” – community reps to our Board of Directors and our Marketing Director.  The meeting lasted until roughly 10pm.

After some explanation and discussion, the recommendation to amend our By-Laws by deleting “dues” from our definition of membership was approved.  Membership now is based on a successful audition and singing in the chorale and no longer includes the payment of “dues.”  Each year members will be invited and encouraged to make financial donations to the financial needs of the chorale.

The proposal to eliminate “complimentary tickets” to members was actively debated.  Several persons expressed opinions on both sides of this issue.  The membership chose to “table” the proposal.  It will go back to the Executive Committee (where it originated) for further consideration.

The several changes in the auditions policy were adopted.  One clarification was noted:  “Singers who do not sing for more than two consecutive semesters must re-audition for membership in the chorale.”  This wording matches the wording regarding “leaves of absence.”  In both cases, re-auditioning is required should a member not sing in the chorale “for more than two consecutive semesters.”

Elections were held.  One office required voting – three persons were nominated for Chorale Representative: Sandy Field, Meredyth Goodwin and Helen Lombard.  Meredyth was elected to the position for a two year term.  The other Chorale Rep currently serving is Holly McCollister.  Other persons elected are the following:  President - Jack Kelly; Secretary – Cheryl Blackburn; Community Representatives on the Board of Directors:  Alice Barbut, Kay Youngblood, and Susan Billin.  All persons elected are serving two-year terms of office.  At its next meeting the Board of Directors will consider appointing Karen Knoff and Howard Peavy to serve in the two vacant positions.

Carolyn Radakovich, our Marketing Director, presented a sketch of the new logo that is being prepared for marketing our new name.  Our new name, Palouse Choral Society, will now go into effect with the beginning of the new season of 2011-2012.

Reports were given by Michael Murphy, our Artistic and Music Director, and Janice O’Toole, our Vice-president.  Both reports dealt particularly with the coming season.  Mike noted that the concert season will begin in October with Chamber Choir concerts and includes full concerts by the Chorale in December, March and June.  The March concert will be a collaboration concert with the Washington-Idaho Symphony.  Janice noted that auditions will be held in mid-August and Chamber Choir rehearsals will begin on August 22, earlier than usual.  The Chorale itself will begin rehearsing on September 12.  The annual singers’ retreat is scheduled for Chamber Choir singers only.

Noted during the meeting was the resigning of Bob Staab, one of our Community Reps on the Board.  Bob and his wife are moving to Vancouver in May.  He has served on the Board for two years and has brought a lot of insight, vision and energy to the Board especially in the area of development of support.

While our meeting was full and busy and somewhat lengthy, it did show how active and exciting the Chorale is.  We are moving in new directions.  We have an excellent nucleus of singers.  We have an exciting and challenging director.  We have a full Board, eleven members, committed to the development and strengthening of the Chorale.  We are looking forward to presenting our last concerts on April 29 and May 1 as the Idaho-Washington Concert Chorale.  We look forward with eager anticipation to our days at the Palouse Choral Society.

Thank you to all who attended and participated in our annual meeting.  A huge thank you to Mike, Janice, Cheryl, Jim, Carolyn and our Board of Directors for all of their work within the organization of our Chorale. Mostly, a really HUGE thank you to all of our Singers!  We are an excellent Choral Society because we have excellent Singers!

The next organizational meetings will be the Executive Committee on Monday, May 9 at 7:00pm at the home of Janice O’Toole out in Colton and the Board of Directors meeting on Monday, May 23 at 7:00pm at Palouse Industries in Pullman.

Thank you for your participation in our Chorale!  Best wishes for wonderful concerts coming up in two weeks!  And very best wishes for a refreshing summer!

President's Report, Annual Membership Meeting

Idaho-Washington Concert Chorale, Monday, April 11, 2011

A year ago I concluded my report to this meeting by writing, “We will undoubtedly continue to find success and certainly we will have challenges in the coming years.  We are trying to come up with a new name for our group; we want to duplicate the kind of response we had in last December's concerts; and we need to continue to strengthen community awareness and support of the Chorale.”  During the current year we have experienced all of these matters.

Because of the excellent marketing efforts of our Marketing Director, Carolyn Radakovich, as well as the quality of music evoked from our singers by our Artistic and Music Director, Dr. Michael Murphy, we have exceeded the response our community is giving to our concerts.  The “Wow!” uttered by one in our audience at our December concert continues to be heard!  Our community is becoming increasingly aware and supportive of our efforts.

A significant challenge during the current year has been the decision of the women to have new concert dresses.  With the leadership of a committee composed of Holly McCollister (chair), Kami Cornwall, Brianne Lindsey, Jill Freuden and Carole Wells, the women have chosen a new concert dress and will be ordering the dresses to be available for the new season.

Our Board of Directors, composed of the four Officers, two Chorale Representatives and several Community Representatives, has continued to provide inspired and visionary leadership for the Chorale.  Plans are being made for a collaborative concert with the Washington/Idaho Symphony next March, for the development of a Children’s Choir in conjunction with the UI, and for a season consisting of four concerts beginning in October, 2011, and concluding in June, 2012.  While we have had some changes on the Board because of resignations – Barb Hayes and Bob Staab – we have found four persons within our community who are accepting community positions on our Board:  Kay Youngblood, Susan Billin, Karen Knoff, and Howard Peavy.  We thank Barb and Bob for their service to our Chorale.

In July fifteen persons will travel to Prague to participate in the Prague International Choral Festival.

Tonight's meeting will be the final meeting of the Idaho-Washington Concert Chorale.  In July, our organization will begin functioning with the new name selected at the organization’s general meeting in September, 2010:  Palouse Choral Society.  This has been a wonderfully exciting and energizing season for us – the second full season with Dr. Murphy.  With our new name, we look forward to a new and very exciting season in 2011-2012.

I want to thank Michael, Elena, Janice, Cheryl, Jim, Holly, Helen, Alice, Barb, Bob, Kay, Carolyn, Jill, Tom, Mark and Dave for their service as key hired, elected and appointed leaders of our Chorale.  And there are many, many others – singers and non-singers – who have helped to effectuate the many activities and efforts of our organization.  And mostly our singers – thank you for your excellence!

Respectfully, Jack Kelly, Chorale President

Executive Meeting 3/29/2011 -- Summary

Our Executive Committee, consisting of the four officers and Artistic and Music Director, met on Tuesday, March 29, 2011.  The discussions of the meeting dealt primarily with the upcoming Annual Meeting (April 11, 8:30pm, Moscow High School) and with two matters in the planning stages.

At the Annual Meeting several items will come before the organization for consideration including the following:
  • Recommendation of the Board of Directors to amend the Bylaws to eliminate “dues”
  • Resolution that we eliminate complimentary tickets to members
  • Resolution that certain changes be made to the auditions policy
  • Election of certain officers, a Chorale Rep. and three Community Reps. to the Board of Directors
  • Reports of activities will also be given by the Director, Vice-President and President
We established a process for review of our Artistic and Music Director for this year.  Singers will be asked to give any comments or suggestions to their Section Leaders (Jill, Cheryl, Tom, David).  The Section Leaders will forward these comments, suggestions, etc. to the Secretary (Cheryl) who will bring them to the Executive Committee at its May 9th meeting.  Janice and Jack will meet with Mike following this meeting to discuss the review and renew his contract for the coming season.

The Committee reviewed information from the Women's Dress Committee on the possibility of new dresses for women of the Chorale.  From the voting the women expressed their desire for a new dress with a choice of necklines.  The Executive Committee is asking the Women’s Dress Committee to proceed with obtaining the new dresses for the women by the next season.

Two matters on which there was considerable discussion had to do with planning the collaboration of a concert next season of the Chorale and the Washington Idaho Symphony.  Mike, Janice and Jim are working closely with their counterparts on the Symphony.  The other item in the planning stage is the development of a Children’s Choir – possibly in conjunction with the Music Department at the UI.

Carolyn Radakovich, our Marketing Director, was present and shared some initial sketches of the new logo for our newly renamed organization – Palouse Choral Society.  The logo is a single eighth note with a Palouse hills swoosh and the name of the Society in an art deco font.  Carolyn will be at the Annual Meeting and will share the logo.

In that regard - the change of our name to Palouse Choral Society – Jim Reece is sending the required documents to the State of Idaho.  Our organization will change its name with the beginning of the new season – July 1, 2011.
